KARHU x DI MOLFETTA FRANTOIANI: "LIQUID GOLD"

The link between Olive oil and the Olympics is a fascinating story, with a deep history dating back to the beginning of the rest games in Greece. In fact, the Olympic game is still ignited using a mirror and olive oil.

Back in ancient Greece, athletes were often massaged with olive oil before their race in the belief that the wisdom, power and strength of the goddess Athena would be bestowed upon them.

Early Olympians competed for victory, and material prizes were given, including amphorae (terracotta cans) filled with “liquid gold”, the best and most expensive olive oil. The amphorae were decorated with details and images of the contest.

Karhu has collaborated with olive oil producer Di Molfetta Frantoiani, on an amphora filled with extra virgin olive oil, inspired by those won by the Olympians in ancient Greece. In the same style as its precursor, the amphora features athletes, in this case, long-distance runners.

Di Molfetta Frantoiani’s “Altea” collection takes its name from the Peucezi people who settled in and around central Apulia from Greece in the 7th century B.C.

The Peucezi people specialized in making terracotta amphorae filled with olive oil, which they gifted to their queen, Altea.

The amphora features white and blue coloured lines, inspired by the flag colours of both Greece and Finland, two nations with a rich athletic history.

The cork wrap is inspired by the gold medal, a prize awarded to winners of the modern Olympics (20th century). The Karhu logo is featured on the bottom, and it comes in a specially designed box.

As an incentive, a select number of stores have received a limited amount of the “LIQUID GOLD” collaboration to be gifted in-store alongside a pair purchased from the Karhu All-Around Pack.
